Physician Profiles


Leonard C. Altman, MD
Dr. Altman received his medical degree in 1969 from Harvard Medical School, and received his medical training at both the University of Washington and at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He is a Board Certified Allergist and holds academic positions as Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as well as Affiliate Professor of Oral Biology and Environmental Health at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Altman has been involved in research studies through the University of Washington since 1975 as well as at the ASTHMA, Inc. Research Center, where he serves as a member of the board. In 1984 he joined private practice with Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center, but continues active participation in basic research. Dr. Altman is an enthusiastic jogger and classic car collector.


Nola Jean Attaway, MD
Dr. Attaway received her medical degree from the University of Texas in 1985. She completed her internship in pediatrics at the Duke University Medical School and her residency at the Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. Dr. Attaway did her fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Washington University. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Attaway is a member of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology and the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology. Dr. Attaway initially joined Northwest Asthma & Allergy in 1999 to work in our Yakima office. She and her family moved to Spokane for a year, where she also worked as an allergist. Fortunately for us, they moved back to the Yakima area in 2001 and she rejoined us in February, 2002.


Jonathan W. Becker, MD
Dr. Becker received his medical degree in 1987 from the University of Washington. After his internship and residency at Duke University, he returned to the University of Washington to complete his fellowship in allergy and immunology. He is Clinical Associate Professor, Pediatrics, at the University of Washington. Dr. Becker has been involved in many research studies through the University of Washington School of Medicine, Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics, and is on the board of ASTHMA, Inc. Dr. Becker received his board certification in allergy in 1993, and joined Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center in July of 1995. He is Immediate-Past Chair of the Continuing Medical Education Committee of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, as well as on several associated Academy committees. He is the Immediate-Past President of the Washington State Society of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology. He is also Member, Board of Directors of the Western Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Dr. Becker is a co-recreational soccer player and competitive international postal history exhibitor.


Clifton T. Furukawa, MD
Dr. Furukawa received his medical degree in 1970 from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York, and then moved to Seattle to pursue his internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Washington and Children's Hospital and Medical Center. After two years service in the Air Force, he did his fellowship in allergy and immunology. He received his board certification in allergy and immunology and joined Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center in 1977. At the University of Washington, he is retired Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and at Children’s Hospital, Clinical Head, Division of Allergy. Dr. Furukawa continues to be active in the training of residents and fellows for the University of Washington. He continues into the second decade as medical advisor for the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. He also serves as a member of the board of ASTHMA, Inc. Dr. Furukawa is an avid fisherman and collects and creates glass paperweights. He also enjoys cooking, boomerangs, wine and playing racquetball.


Michael S. Kennedy, MD
Dr. Kennedy received his medical degree at the University of New Mexico in 1974. He then completed his internship and residency at the University of Washington with a 3-year fellowship in clinical pharmacology at the University of California at San Francisco. After a 5-year term as Head of Clinical Pharmacology at Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Dr. Kennedy did his fellowship in allergy and immunology in 1986. He received his Board Certification in Allergy and Immunology in 1986. After 8 years of private practice in allergy and internal medicine, he joined Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center in 1993. He is active at the University of Washington as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Kennedy teaches Residents and Fellows from UW as well as Swedish Hospital at our clinics. Dr. Kennedy is the Past President of the Puget Sound Allergy Society and Washington State Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society. Dr. Kennedy is an avid golfer and a skiing medical advisor at Steven's Pass. He and his family participate in these activities whenever possible.


Mary V. Lasley, MD
Dr. Lasley received her medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska in 1990. She completed both her pediatric training in 1993 and a fellowship in allergy and immunology in 1995 at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. She received Board Certification in Pediatrics in 1993 and in Allergy and Immunology in 1995, and has recertified in both of these specialties. Dr. Lasley joined the physicians of Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center in January, 1998. She currently holds a Clinical Faculty position with the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington. She is active in local, state and national allergy societies. She enjoys cooking and spending time with her family exploring the Puget Sound region.


David R. Naimi, DO
Dr. Naimi grew up in Mukilteo, WA and was a graduate of Mariner High School and the University of Washington. He received his osteopathic medical degree in 2002 at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. After finishing his pediatric residency at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital (Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland, he went on to complete his fellowship training in allergy and immunology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (University of Pennsylvania). Dr. Naimi was board certified in Pediatrics in 2005 and Allergy & Immunology in 2008. After working as part of the medical staff at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia since July 2007, he joined Northwest Asthma and Allergy Center in March 2008. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington and is on staff at Children’s Hospital in Seattle and Stevens Hospital in Edmonds. Dr. Naimi enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring the Pacific NW, traveling, painting, and participating in local and international volunteer work. He is also a loyal Husky and Seahawks fan.


Audrey Y. Park, MD, PhD
Dr. Park received her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She then went on to receive a PhD in immunology at the same school. Dr. Park then completed her residency in pediatrics and her fellowship in allergy and immunology at The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. She is Board Certified in Pediatrics and is Board Certified in Allergy and Immunology. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Pediatrics Department at the University of Washington. Dr. Park joined Northwest Asthma & Allergy in 2009 and will work in our eastside offices: Redmond Ridge, Redmond and Issaquah. She and her family recently moved to the Seattle area from Pennsylvania. They are looking forward to experiencing all the Northwest has to offer.


Jay D. Sprenger, MD
Dr. Sprenger received his medical degree in 1974 from Albany Medical College of Union University. He joined the United States Air Force as a senior medical student and completed his internship and Internal Medicine residency at David Grant USAF Medical Center, Travis AFB, CA in 1977. Dr. Sprenger did his Allergy and Immunology fellowship at the University of Washington in 1985. He is board certified both in Internal Medicine and Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Colonel Sprenger completed a 30-year career in the Air Force holding numerous clinical and senior leadership positions to include Commander of four medical facilities including the US Air Force Academy Hospital, Allergy Consultant to the Surgeon General, Director of Air Force Physician Graduate Education programs and Air Force Medical Corps Chief before taking his retirement in 2003. He then returned to his northwest roots, taking time off to remodel and expand his Seattle home and engage in worldwide travel, following which he joined Northwest Asthma and Allergy Center in 2005. Dr. Sprenger is an avid skier, snowboarder, mountain climber, and windsurfer who enjoys all aspects of the Pacific Northwest.


Ashley Jerath Tatum, MD
Dr. Tatum received her medical degree in 1995 from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, after completing her undergraduate degree in Biophysics and Biochemistry at Northwestern in 1991. After finishing her residency in the Department of Internal Medicine at Northwestern University, she completed her fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Tatum is board certified in Allergy and Immunology and in Internal Medicine. After practicing allergy in the Chicago area, she moved back to the Pacific Northwest, where she had grown up, and joined Northwest Asthma and Allergy Center in 2001. She works in our Renton, Redmond, and Seattle offices caring for both adult and pediatric patients. Dr. Tatum holds a clinical faculty position in the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington and pursues her research interests as a member of the board at ASTHMA, Inc. Clinical Research Center in Seattle. She lives on the Eastside with her husband and two young sons. Her outside interests include art history, boating, and volunteer work in her sons’ schools.


Stephen A. Tilles, MD
Dr. Tilles received his medical degree in 1990 from the University of California at San Diego after finishing his undergraduate work at Harvard in 1982. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University in 1993 and his Allergy and Immunology fellowship at the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine in Denver in 1995. Before joining NAAC, Dr. Tilles spent five years as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Allergy and Asthma Clinic at the Oregon Health Sciences University. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Allergy and Immunology, and he has a special interest in difficult asthma and a unique syndrome called vocal cord dysfunction. Dr. Tilles joined the Northwest Asthma and Allergy Center in September, 2000, and has been appointed Executive Director of ASTHMA, Inc. He splits his time between seeing patients in clinic and serving as Executive Director. Dr. Tilles is a Past President of the Oregon Society of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. His outside interests include rowing and sailing.


Thao Ngoc Tran, MD
Dr. Tran received her and medical degree in 2000 from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Tran did her fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at State University of New York, Stony Brook, NY. Dr. Tran was Board Certified in Internal Medicine in 2003 and Allergy and Immunology in 2005. She is active in the American College of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology and local groups. After practicing in the Puget Sound area for the past year, she will join the physicians at Northwest Asthma and Allergy Center in January 2007. Her outside interests include canoeing, hiking, and gardening.


Frank S. Virant, MD
Dr. Virant is a Seattle native and completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Washington in 1976. He was granted his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1980, and returned to the University of Washington to pursue his pediatric residency and allergy/asthma/immunology fellowship. He currently is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Director of the Allergy/Immunology Training Program at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Virant is Board Certified in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, as well as Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology. He is Chief of the Allergy Division at Seattle Children’s Hospital. At Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center he works primarily in the Seattle office, but also sees patients in Redmond, Renton, and Yakima. Dr. Virant has served as President of the Washington State Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and of the TransPacific Allergy and Immunology Society. He has also served as Chairman of the Education & Research Trust, and of the Sinusitis Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Since 2003, he has been an Executive Board Member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Allergy & Immunology. Dr. Virant is also director of clinical and research laboratories at Northwest Asthma & Allergy Center. Outside of the office, Dr. Virant enjoys basketball and golf, and is an avid Husky and Mariner fan. He sees patients of all ages, and has special interests in sinusitis, asthma and food allergy.


John C. Walker, MD
Dr. John C. Walker joined Northwest Asthma in January 2003 to work at our Richland and Yakima offices. He received his MD from the Uniformed Services University in Maryland. He completed his fellowship in allergy at the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Colorado and has recently retired as Chief of Allergy/Immunology at Madigan Army Medical Center, Ft. Lewis, WA. He is board certified is allergy and immunology. and is a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington. Dr. Walker enjoys hunting and fishing.


Michael E. Weiss, MD
Dr. Weiss received his medical degree in 1981 from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook School of Medicine. After completing his residency at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, he did his fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and received Board Certification in allergy and immunology in 1989. He moved to Seattle in 1989 and after practicing allergy and asthma medicine in Redmond for 11 years, he joined Northwest Asthma and Allergy Center in 2000. He is the primary physician in our Redmond, Washington office. He is very actively involved in numerous local and national allergy and immunology societies. He holds an academic position as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Washingotn School of Medicine. He is former Chief of Staff at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center, Past President of the Puget Sound Allergy Society and of the Washington State Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Dr. Weiss is past chairman of the Adverse Reactions to Medication Committee and is a member of the Latex Allergy Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma,and Immunology. Dr. Weiss is a member of the advisory committee to the FDA on allergenic products. He serves as a member of the board of ASTHMA, Inc. Clinical Research Center. Dr. Weiss is a passionate golfer. Despite his high handicap, he continues to enjoy the walk interrupted by hitting small white objects. He lives in Bellevue with his wife, two daughters and a hypoallergenic dog.


Paul V. Williams, MD
Dr. Williams received his MD from the University of Washington on 1971, and completed his Pediatric residency at the University of Rochester in upstate New York in 1978, serving as Chief Pediatric Resident in 1977-78. After 10 years of general pediatric practice in Mount Vernon, he returned to school to complete a Fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Washington in 1991. Dr. Williams is Board Certified in Allergy and Immunology and has worked for Northwest Asthma & Allergy since 1991. He works primarily in the Mount Vernon office, but also sees patients in the Everett and Yakima offices. He has been active in local, state and national medical and allergy organizations, having served as the president of the Puget Sound Allergy Society, and the Washington State Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He has served as governor of the Rocky Mountain and Northwest region of the Federation of Regional, State and Local Allergy Societies and as chairman of that organization. He is immediate past-Chair of the Section on Allergy & Immunology of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). He has served on many committees for the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology (AAAAI), including the Continuing Medical Education Committee and the Credentials Committee. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Joint Council on Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and has represented the American Medical Association on the National Asthma Education and Prevention Panel for the last 16 years, serving on that panel's subcommittee on asthma and school. Dr. Williams is also interested in the education of physicians in allergy and asthma, and serves as Director of the Allergy Elective for Pediatric Residents at the University of Washington, assistant program director for the Allergy Fellowship Program at the University, and is on the AAP’s annual meeting program. He is currently serving as Chair of the AAP Section Forum Management Committee, which oversees the activities of pediatric subspecialist and surgical specialist interest groups within the AAP. Outside of the office, Dr. Williams is a rabid Husky fan and takes a special interest in youth sports. He has served as a soccer referee, Little League Umpire and Little League District Administrator, and just retired after 25 years of volunteer service to Little League Baseball. Dr. Williams sees patients of all ages, and has a special interest in pediatric asthma, asthma in the schools and food allergies.
